March 8th, is globally the International Women's Day (IWD). During 1977, this day was observed as a popular event when the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to state March 8th as the UN Day for Women's rights and International Peace. Since then, this is a major day of global celebration of women. This special day is being celebrated around the globe in order to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. This year of 2011, marked the 100th year of celebration of IWD.
Keeping the fundamental nature of this special day, City Bank Limited for its very first time has celebrated International Women's Day in order to honor women, organized by their Human Resource Department. The theme for the event was the ""Pathway to Decent Work for Women; Women Empowerment". There were around eighty women from various divisions of The City Bank who were present in the event. The selection of the invitations was done in a random sample, making sure that female employees from different divisions were present in the event.
At 04:30 pm on the event day, La Vita hall of Lakeshore hotel in Banani was filled with beautiful women looking pretty in purple. The event started off with a small Audio Visual as a tribute to women. Three of the most prominent women personalities who were from dissimilar sectors of Bangladesh, were gracious enough to attend the event as chief guests. They were - Ms. Ayesha Aziz Khan, Director Summit Group; Ms. Jasmin Manjoor, Senior Consultant & Coordinator, Dermatology Department, Apollo Hospital and Ms. Rubab Dawla, Chief Service Officer, Airtel Bangladesh Ltd. Each of them shared their valuable experience with people along with history of IWD. They focused on the fact on how essential it is for women to believe in her and take challenges on board without having any hesitation or fear. After the esteem guests' speech, three of City Bank's respected female members took the stage and shared their experiences working as a mother, professional and an individual. The members were Ms. Mahia Juned, Head of Operations; Ms. Parul Das, Head of Finance and Ms. Nasrin Akhter, BSSM, Gulshan Avenue Branch.
Mr. K Mahmood Sattar, CEO & Managing Director of City Bank spoke about the role of women in society and in every day's life and how it is essential for people, especially women to have a positive attitude towards everything. Afterwards, the forum was made open for all to speak up in the ‘Open Discussion' session, which was truly a highlight of the event. Through the Open Discussion, the women got the chance to speak and share their part of stories and how challenging and difficult it is to maintain stability between work and family, and yet they do it effectively.
The event ended with a positive concept to make every day women's day.
